1606In the tower of London, Nicholas Owen ("Little John,") was tortured to death on the rack. After death, a hair-shirt was found on his body.
1615At Rome Father Fabius de Fabii, one of the ancient family of the Fabii, had a painful death, having been gored by a savage bull on the way to St. Paul's. He would not seek a miracle from St. Francis Xavier, whose arm had recently been brought to Rome, but preferred to resign himself to God's holy will. He had been Master of Novices, Provincial, and Assistant.
1760Empress Maria Teresa of Austria decreed that the chairs of theology in all the universities within her domain should be held by Dominicans or Augustinians to avoid the "corrupt doctrine taught by the Jesuits."
1914E. Schillebeeckx is born. Theologian. His brother, a Jesuit, was a Provincial in India.
1919Instruction of Father General Ledochowski on typewriters, Usus machinae dactylographicae. They would be allowed for offices, not for persons, and should not be carried from one house to another.
1982Vincent O’Keefe, General Assistant to Fr. Arrupe, received the Xavier Award at the 40th annual dinner.
1989Raymond Adams, S.J. dies Anthropologist, superior, teacher. He was murdered in Cape Coast, Ghana by one he was trying to help.
