Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest

By design, this feast inaugurates the octave leading up to the celebration of Corpus Christi. Because the letter is celebrated on a Sunday, in the Dioceses of Southern Africa, this feast is moved to the Thursday before Corpus Christi – or – left to the discretion of the Dioecesan Bishop as when it will be celebrated in the Diocese. The feast inaugurates a triduum leading up to the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN EDITION

The Ordo,which is based on the Genral Roma Calendar is an indispensable aid in the preparation of good liturgy. It is not, however, a complete instruction on Liturgical celebrations. Those involved in the planning of the liturgy – Priests and Deacons, Liturgy Commissions, members of Religious Communities – are encouraged to study the liturgical documents upon which the Order is based,such as

• The General Instruction on the Roman Missal for Southern Africa (SACBC 2007).
• The General Instruction on the Liturgy of the Hours (1971).
• The Introduction to the Lectionary (1981).
• Pastoral Introduction to the Order of Mass: A pastoral Directory and Resources (SACBC 2008).
• The English translation of the Order of Mass © 2006, International Committee on English in the Liturgy.
• The Roman Missal: New English Translation according to the Third Typical Edition (2010). Paulines Publications Africa; (2011).
• Lectionary (Ignatius Press, October (2011).
• Becoming one Body One Spirit in Christ. International Committee on English in the liturgy (2010).

This Southern African edition of the Ordo shows changes which have been approved for the Region, as well as other information of regional interest.

With regard to Holy Days of Obligation₁, the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference has decreed that, in addition to Sunday, the day to be observed is:

• the Solemnity of The Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ ( December 25).

The following solemnities are transferred to Sundays

• The Epiphany to the Sunday between January 2 and January 8;
• The Ascension of Christ to the following Sunday.
• The Body and Blood of Christ to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday.
• The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Sunday following 15 August.
• The Solemnity of All Saints to the following Sunday.

The Solemnities of the

• Immaculate Conception (8 December),
• the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God (1 January),
• St Joseph (19 March), and
• the Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul (29 June)

shall NOT be observed as Holy Days of Obligation.

Also included in this Ordo are Patronal Feasts of the Dioceses and Religious Congregations as well as Anniversaries of Episcopal Ordinations and deaths of previous Bishops.
