1522At Montserrat, St. Ignatius hung up his sword near Our Lady's altar, and after a night vigil swore to serve only Christ and His Mother.
1535St.Ignatius Loyola receives his diploma for the M.A. at the University of Paris. His studies and exams ended 1534. This gives him the right to be called Master Ignatius, which became his regular title. He had received the licentiate one year earlier.
1568Father John Segura with five companions set sail from Spain for Florida, that fertile field of martyrs. (Nine Jesuits were killed between 1566 and 1571).
1599The birth of John Berchmans at Diest in Flanders.
1820In Russia, an imperial ukase of Czar Alexander I banished all Jesuits from the Empire where the Society had survived from 1773 until the restoration in 1814.
1939Alban Goodier, S.J. dies Archbishop and spiritual writer.
1940Auguste Coemans, S.J. dies Rome, age 75.. He is the author of Commentary on the Rules of the Society of Jesus and he prepared the new edition of the Epitome.
2013Pope Francis, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected to be the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church being the first Jesuit in history to become Pope.
