1551St. Francis Borgia wrote to the Emperor Charles V announcing his intention to enter the Society of Jesus and asking leave to resign his dukedom in favor of his eldest son, the Marquis de Lombay.
1552At Rome, while the boys of the newly opened First Jesuit School, under the Capitol, were at Mass, two women entered the Church, shouting and accusing the Jesuits of robbing mothers of their children.
1623At Louvain died Father Leonard Lessius, SJ. Age 69. 1624. At Valladolid died Ven. Father Louis de Ponte, a Spaniard, renowned for his holiness of life and ascetical works. 1776. In Rome the Jesuit prisoners in Castel S. Angelo were restored to liberty. Father Romberg, the German Assistant,aged 80, expressed a wish to remain in prison.
1888John Berchmans, Alphonsus Rodriguez, Peter Claver are canonized.
1901In the French Parliament, a Bill was introduced against Religious Congregations. The Society had to transfer its novitiates and Scholasticates abroad.
1906The birth of Gustave Weigel, theologian and ecumenist.
1937The Sacred Heart Program aired on radio for the first time, WEW, station of St. Louis University.
1942The Volume I, Number I issue of Review for Religious makes its debut. It originated at St. Mary’s College, Kansas.
1955The death of Daniel Lord, popular writer, U.S. director of the Sodality, founder of the Summer School of Catholic Action, and editor of The Queen's Work.
1978Fr. Desmond Donovan, S.J. teacher, disappears in Zimbabwe.
1987Jesuits are forced to close their school in southern Sudan because of civil war.
2008Eduardo Hontiveras, S.J. dies age 84. Philippine Jesuit musician and liturgist.
