Saints Roch González, Alphonsus Rodríguez and John del Castillo, Priests and Martyrs (Optional Memorial)

The Province of Paraguay was established in 1607 to minister to the nomadic Guaraní Indian tribes. The first Jesuit priest sent to San Ignacio Guazú Mission was Roch González. He was joined in 1627 by Alphonsus Rodríguez and John del Castillo, both natives of Spain. Their successful missionary activities brought the Jesuits into conflict with a local religious leader, who was responsible for putting the missionaries to death.

1857Jon Svennson, S.J. is born. He wrote children’s stories about Iceland, and has been translated into forty languages. A native of Iceland, he wrote in German.
1889Josef Jungmann, S.J. is born. History of Liturgy.
1968Cardinal Bea, S.J. dies Scripture Scholar, ecumenist. He was Confessor of Pius XI and Pius XII and created a Cardinal in 1959. He was appointed to head Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity at the age of 79.
1989The assassination in San Salvador, El Salvador, of Ignacio EllacurĂ­a, Ignacio MartĂ­n-BarĂł, Segundo Mondes, JoaquĂ­n LĂłpez, Juan RamĂłn Moreno, and Amando LĂłpez, along with their cook, Elba JuliaRamos, and her daughter Celina Maricet Ramos.
