1556Motu Proprio is issued to the effect that the Roman College can grant higher degrees in philosophy and theology.
1559At Rome died Robert Cardinal de Nobili, aged 18, a candidate for the Society but prevented by the Pope from entering.
1706The 15th General Congregation opened. Fr. Michael Angelo Tamburini was elected General on January 31.
1890Benedict Sestini, S.J. dies. Astronomer, editor, founder of the Messenger of the Sacred Heart and editor l866-85. He was a teacher at Woodstock College, an architect and mathematician. He designed the library ceiling at Woodstock.
1975William T. Noon, S.J. dies New York Province, Joyce scholar. He wrote Poetry and Prayer.
1981The Society is informed of the meeting of Fr. Arrupe with Pope John Paul II on this day where he expresses his desire to present his resignation as General to the 33rd General Congregation.
1996Juan Luis Segundo, S.J. dies. A Uruguayan, he wrote extensively on the theology of liberation.
