Luigi Centurione is elected as Superior General in the GC XVIII. Centurione would lead the Society for a little over two years before he died. Just a few weeks after Carvalho, the marquis de Pombal, tookthefirst overt step to banish the Jesuits from Portugal.
1759
The Bishop of Rio de Janeiro accused the Jesuits of concealing relics and other church treasures belonging to their suppressed churches. All who had knowledge of the matter and refused to disclose it, were to be excommunicated.
1769
On the river La Plata, Father Benasser and two scholastics who were beingn led prisoners from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, were accidentally drowned.
1913
Marc Barthelemy S.J. dies. He was a missionary to Southern Africa and the founder of St. George’s College in Zimbabwe. In his honor was a very well attended funeral in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
