1581 | Church of St. Mary's, Oxford, Commencement Day. The pamphlet of Edmund Campion, Ten Reasons appears and it is his call to debate. But he will be martyred in less than one year. |
1673 | Marquette and Joliet are the first Europeans to see the upper Mississippi River. Marquette writes: "We entered the Mississippi with a joy I am unable to express." He names it the River of the Immaculate Conception. He saw it at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. |
