On this day in our Jesuit history...

1554The husband of Princess Juana dies. She was 19, and, under the alias of Mateo Sanchez would soon become a Jesuit scholastic.
1619At Rome, St. John Berchmans and Bartholomew Penneman, his companion scholastic from Belgium, entered the Roman College.
1726Domenico Zipoli, S.J. dies of tuberculosis. He was a composer in the Jesuit Reductions. He died before his ordination, which was delayed because no bishop was near.
1848At Rome, as Pius IX was returning to the Quirinal, angry shouts were raised, "Death to the Jesuits." The Pope fainted in his carriage.
1922Formal opening of Weston College as a House of Studies.
1953Pope Pius XII gives permission to St. Louis University President Paul Reinert to name the new library in his honor.
1983Cy Schommer, S.J., violinist, dies.
1983Pope John Paul II reveals his intention to make Carlo Martini, S.J. and Henri deLubac, S.J. cardinals. There have been 18 Jesuit cardinals.
1987The end of a five day meeting of Jesuit Islamicists in Cairo.
1993Victor Yanitelli dies President of St. Peter's College, 1963-80, and parochial vicar. The homilist at his funeral said: "When I die, I want to be judged by Vic rather than by Jesus Christ."
