The death of Alexander Valignani at Macao. For 33 years he held the offices of Provincial and Visitor of the Indies. He devised the far-seeing missionary policies to be followed there by Ricci and subsequent Jesuits.

Andre-Marie Ampere was born. A physicist, he founded the science of electrodynamics to measure electricity, later known as a galvanometer. He was an alumnus of a Jesuit School during the time of the Suppression.
