1624At Cracow died John Laskowski, a Polish scholastic, who though not conscious of any mortal sin in his whole life was nonetheless so tormented with scruples that his confessor considered him a martyr of interior suffering.
1872At Rome, gangs of miscreants paraded the streets crying out: "Death to the Friars! Death to the Jesuits!."
1900The death in China of Sts. Paul Denn and Leo Mangin, martyrs of the Boxer Rebellion; the Church celebrates their feast on Feb. 4.
1944An abortive plot against Hitler by General Claus von Stauffenberg and his assistants resulted in the arrest of the Jesuit, Alfred Delp.
