Restoration of the Society in Austria.
1823
At Rome the death of Pope Pius VII, the restorer of the Society in 1814 and its second Father. His name will remain with us in benediction for ever.

At Santiago in Chile, the Government of Balmaceda ordered the Jesuit College to be closed.

Excitement in Rome because seven Italians were killed in a riot in Frances. Angry shouts were raised by the mob, "Down with the Pope! Death to the Jesuits!" and the windows of the German College were broken.
