Pope St. Pius V wrote a letter to the Archbishop of Cologne asking him to befriend the Society of Jesus and its college in that city.

Laurence Ricci is elected General. He was chosen to guide the Society through a sea of storms. He will die in 1775 after imprisonment in Castel S. Angelo.
1925
Pius XI canonizes Peter Canisius, with Teresa of the Child Jesus and Mary Madeleine Postal, Madeleine Sophie Barat, John Vianney, and John Eudes. Canisius is declared a Doctor of the Church.
2003
The death of Victor Mertens, S.J. age 90. He had been Vice-Provincial and Provincial of Central Africa, Counselor to Fr. General and Assistant for Africa from 1971-80.
