1540The birth of St. Edmund Campion.
1585Mary Ward is born. She founded the Institute of Mary, or the English Ladies, an institute of apostolic women, also called the Jesuitesses, which was later suppressed, and she was imprisoned. This is the date in the Old Style Calendar.
1656Pascal published his first Provincial Letter against the Society of Jesus.
1656The publication of Pascal's First Provincial Letter against the Society. Others followed at intervals until March 27, 1657. In 1658 they were condemned at Rome, and on October l0, 1660 publicly burnt by the French King's order.
1789John Carroll gains the deed of land for the site and origin of Georgetown University.
1871Famous missionary Peter deSmet visits Woodstock College for a few days.
1876Blessed Rupert Mayer, S.J. is born.
1893Frederic Faura Brat, S.J. dies. An astronomer, he was the founder of the Manila Observatory, and an inventor of an aneroid barometer.
1909The death of William Pardow, S.J., Preacher and Provincial (1893-97). He established the first mission of the US Jesuits in Jamaica.
1932Decree in Spain dissolves the Society of Jesus in Spain. It is reversed by Franco six years later.
1971Dan Berrigan and his brother Phil Berrigan make the cover of Time Magazine.
