1527At Alcala, St. Ignatius accused of having advised two noblewomen to undertake a pilgrimage on foot to Compostella, was cast into prison.
1537Ignatius, Francis Xavier and five of the companions were ordained priests in Venice, Italy.
1578The death in Clare, Ireland, of David Wolfe, pioneer Jesuit of the Irish mission, after five years imprisonment.
1580Edmund Campion, disguised as a jeweler, arrives in Dover, England. 1773. By order of Clement XIV, the Archives of the Roman Novitiate were sealed.
1782The Jesuits in White Russia are permitted by Empress Catherine to elect a General. Fr. Czerniewicz is elected, took the title of Vicar-General, with the powers of General.
1782The Jesuits in White Russia were permitted by the Empress Catherine to elect a superior general. They chose Father Czerniewicz, who took the title of vicar general, with the powers of the general. There werefive Polish Congregation during the suppression of the Society of Jesus. This Congregations elected Vicar General: Stanislaw Czerniewicz (1782), Gabriel Lenkiewicz (1785), Franciszek Kareu (1798) who was canonically confirmed as Superior General by the Pope Pius VII, and then also as Superior Generals Gabriel Gruber (1802) and Tadeusz Brozozowski (1805).
1872Imperial law permits the expulsion of Jesuits from the German Empire.
1984Michel Foucault, philosopher, dies. Jesuit alumnus.
