1782 | The Jesuits in White Russia were permitted by the Empress Catherine to elect a superior general. They chose Father Czerniewicz, who took the title of vicar general, with the powers of the general. There werefive Polish Congregation during the suppression of the Society of Jesus. This Congregations elected Vicar General: Stanislaw Czerniewicz (1782), Gabriel Lenkiewicz (1785), Franciszek Kareu (1798) who was canonically confirmed as Superior General by the Pope Pius VII, and then also as Superior Generals Gabriel Gruber (1802) and Tadeusz Brozozowski (1805). |
