The Jesuits in White Russia were permitted by the Empress Catherine to elect a superior general. They chose Father Czerniewicz, who took the title of vicar general, with the powers of the general. There wereï¬ve Polish Congregation during the suppression of the Society of Jesus. This Congregations elected Vicar General: Stanislaw Czerniewicz (1782), Gabriel Lenkiewicz (1785), Franciszek Kareu (1798) who was canonically conï¬rmed as Superior General by the Pope Pius VII, and then also as Superior Generals Gabriel Gruber (1802) and Tadeusz Brozozowski (1805).
