1580Fr. Balthasar Alvarez dies. Spiritual Director of Teresa of Avila, Master of Novices, and Provincial of three Provinces. St. Teresa learned by revelation that he was one of the most perfect men then living.
1581An interview between Queen Elizabeth and Edmund Campion. He had addressed her at Oxford 15 years earlier.
1583The martyrdom near Goa, India, of Blessed Rudolph Aquaviva, Peter Berno, Francis Aranha, Alphonsus Pacheco and Anthony Francisco. It is listed as July 15th in the old style calendar. Peter Berno is the only Swiss Jesuit who has been beatified.
1657In Poland died Fr. William Rose, a Frenchman, confessor to the Queen of Poland. His bed was a board, and two books served for pillow.
1922Pius XI declares St. Ignatius the heavenly patron of Spiritual Exercises and related works.
