Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Priests, and Companions, Martyrs (Feast)

Jesuits of the French Province did considerable missionary work among the indigenous tribes in North America, in Huronia (Quebec Province), between 1625 and 1649. They eventually constructed a Christian settlement. The martyrdom of the eight saints commemorated today occurred in the context of conflicts between the Huron and Iroquois tribes. They were killed by the Iroquois. The martyrs commemorated today are: Fathers John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Anthony Daniel, Charles Garnier, Noël Chabanel, Gabriel Lalemant, Brother René Goupil and lay volunteer John de La Lande.

1886At Florence in the theatre "Re Umberto," 3,000 Liberals shouted for the expulsion of all Jesuits from Tuscany. Soon after, the theatre was burned to the ground.
1889Martin Heidegger is born. Philosopher, had been a Jesuit novice.
1926Felix Millan dies in the leper colony in Culion, Philippines. He is called "The Father of the Lepers."
1926Jesuit High, New Orleans, opens.
1926The death at the leprosarium in CuliĂłn, the Philippines, of Father Felipe MillĂĄn, known as the "Father of Lepers" after a life heroically dedicated to caring for the sick.
