Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Priests, and Companions, Martyrs (Feast)
Jesuits of the French Province did considerable missionary work among the indigenous tribes in North America, in Huronia (Quebec Province), between 1625 and 1649. They eventually constructed a Christian settlement. The martyrdom of the eight saints commemorated today occurred in the context of conflicts between the Huron and Iroquois tribes. They were killed by the Iroquois. The martyrs commemorated today are: Fathers John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Anthony Daniel, Charles Garnier, Noël Chabanel, Gabriel Lalemant, Brother René Goupil and lay volunteer John de La Lande.
