1547Pope Paul III acceded to the request that the Society of Jesus not have women as members nor have a parallel women’s order.
1702Fr. Dominique Bouhours, literary critic and author of lives of St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier, died at Paris. The poet John Dryden translated the latter into English after his conversion.
1930The death of José María Algué, one of the great meteorologists in the history of the world. He invented a machine to measure barometric pressure that saved many lives in the Far East.
1954Francis LeBuffe, S.J. dies. Author, Spiritual writer, lawyer, Sodalist, philosopher, anthropologist. From the New York Province, he died on Ascension Thursday.
1971Bernard Leeming, S.J. dies. Theologian and ecumenist, he attended Xavier High School in New York.
1974Herbert Musurillo, S.J. dies Classicist, patristic scholar.
