1545Jeronimo de Nadal, whom St. Ignatius had known as a student at Paris, entered the Society. Later Nadal was instrumental in getting Ignatius to narrate his autobiography.
1629At Nagasaki, Blessed Leonard Kimura, Japanese lay brother, died a glorious martyr by fire.
1629The martyrdom in Nagasaki, Japan, of Blessed Leonardo Kimura, who was burned to death.
1680Gian Lorenzo Bernini, sculptor, architect, dies. He was a friend and benefactor of the Society. San Andrea Quirinale was his favorite creation
1759Twenty Fathers and 192 Scholastics set sail from the Tagus for exile. Two were to die on the voyage to Genoa and Civita Vecchia.
1855John Baptist Hus is appointed superior of the New York Canada Mission.
1942Cocoanut Grove Fire. 500 friends and alumni/ae of Holy Cross and Boston College perish.
1954Fr. Martin Scott, S.J. dies age 89. Writer, apologist, Answer Wisely. He wrote more than 25 books.
1980Clement Armitage, S.J. He worked at Jesuit Mission magazine from 1947-1980.
1984Fr. Joseph Pittau, General Counselor, received Japan’s highest honor, the Order of the Rising Sun, for his contribution to education.
