Thomas Ewing Sherman, S.J. dies in New Orleans. He was the son of General Sherman, an orator on the mission band. He suffered a breakdown, and wanted to leave the Society, but was refused because of his ill health. Before his death he renewed his vows in the Society.

The Bishop of Monze, Paul Lungu, S.J., 51, died in a road accident. For his funeral, all ten Zambian Bishops and the Nuncio were present at the ceremony which lasted for four hours and which was attended by an estimated gathering of 10,000 people. The ritual dances and mournful singing performed during the Mass are the traditional honors given to a chief among the Tonga people.
