Saint José María Rubio, Priest (Optional Memorial)

José María Rubio (1864-1929) was born in Dalias, Spain. He joined the Society as a diocesan priest in 1906, at the age of forty-two. In 1911, he was appointed to the Professed House in Madrid, where he remained for the rest of his life. Rubio was fully engaged in preaching, spiritual direction and hearing confessions. He chose to work primarily among the poor. He built up teams of Catholic laity, founded on a strong Eucharistic spirituality, who collaborated in his numerous initiatives in the city’s slums and suburbs. He is acclaimed as the “Apostle of Madrid” and “Father of the Poor”.

1650The archbishop of Sens in France, a friend of the Jansenists, ordered prayers in his diocese for the conversion of the Jesuits.
1881The Society was expelled from the Republic of Nicaragua.
1902Carlos Sommervogel, S.J. dies Historian of the Society of Jesus, bibliographer.
1938Franco invites the Jesuits to return to Spain. They had been banned in 1932.
1971The announcement of the opening of the Center of Concern in Washington, DC.
2003St. Joseph Mary­­­ Rubio, S.J. Parish priest in Madrid. Optional Memorial. He died on May 2, 1929. On this day, in 2003 he was canonized.
