King Ferdinand VII suppressed the Society of Jesus in Spain.

The birth in Indiana of James Chrysostom Bouchard (Watomika) the first Native American Jesuit. A member of the Delaware tribe, he was ordained in St. Louis in 1856. He became one of the Province’s best orators, prompting a book about him called the Eloquent Indian.

General Congregation XXIX convened to elect a new superior general; nine days later it chose the Belgian Jesuit, John Baptist Janssens.

The opening of the 29th General Congregation, with 169 electors. On September 15th, they will elect Fr. Janssens as General.
