The 10th General Congregation opened and it elected as General the Roman Jesuit Luigi Gottifredi, but he died three months later while the Congregation was still in session. The German Jesuit, Goswin Nickelis elected superior general.

Bishop Du Bourg offered the Jesuits his college, which was to become St. Louis University.
1996
Wilhelm Klein, S.J. dies at Muenster, at the age of 106. He was a Professor and Provincial, perhaps the oldest Jesuit ever.
