Saint Joseph de Anchieta, Priest (Optional Memorial)
Joseph de Anchieta (1534-1597) was born in Tenerife, Spain. He was sent for studies to Coimbra, Portugal, and there entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1551. He suffered a spinal injury during his novitiate and was sent to Brazil to recuperate, but remained there for forty-four years. Over the years he was present at the decisive events of the first century of Brazilian history. He became a major architect of the “reductions” which aimed to educate the nomadic tribes and protect them from slave-raiders. In several ways he was a most extraordinary man and is acclaimed as the “Apostle of Brazil. Anchieta was declared a Saint through a decree of “equivalent canonization” by Pope Francis on 3 April 2014.

At Saragossa, the Vicar General, prejudiced against the infant Society, forbad the faithful to hear Mass in the Jesuit chapel.

Blessed Joseph Ancieta, S.J. optional memorial. "Apostle of Brazil. Birds and beasts paid him reverence: he seemed in innocence to resemble Adam before the fall. When in captivity he composed a hymn of 4,000 Latin verses in Our Lady's honor." Brazil's most famous missionary, and the founder of the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He died on this day in 1597.
