Saint Peter Claver, Priest (Memorial)
Peter Claver (1580-1654) was born in Catalonia, Spain. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1602 at Tarragona. During his study of philosophy at Montesion, Palma in Majorca, he came under the influence of the saintly porter, Brother Alphonsus Rodriguez. Rodriguez encouraged Claver’s desire to do something great for God and suggested he consider being a missionary in the New World. After completing his theological studies in Bogotá, Claver was sent to Cartagena on the Caribbean coast where he was ordained a priest in 1616. There he spent the rest of his life, ministering to slaves who worked in the mines and plantations.
